The PTE Academic test format is divided into three main sections, focusing on the four core language skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. The test is entirely computer-based, and the tasks are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to use English in academic settings.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the PTE test format

Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes)

This section tests your ability to produce spoken and written English.

Speaking Tasks:

  • Personal Introduction (not scored): Candidates give a brief self-introduction.
  • Read Aloud: You will read a short text aloud.
  • Repeat Sentence: You hear a sentence and need to repeat it exactly.
  • Describe Image: You describe an image (graph, chart, map, etc.).
  • Re-tell Lecture: You listen to a lecture or audio and summarize it in your own words.
  • Answer Short Questions: You hear a question and answer with a short response.

Writing Tasks:

  • Summarize Written Text: Write a one-sentence summary of a given passage (5-75 words).
  • Essay (20 minutes): Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic, often requiring an argumentative or descriptive approach.
Reading (29–30 minutes)

This section tests your ability to understand written English. It is divided into several tasks:

  • Multiple-Choice, Choose Single Answer: Read a passage and select the correct answer.
  • Multiple-Choice, Choose Multiple Answers: Read a passage and choose more than one correct answer.
  • Re-order Paragraphs: Drag and drop the given paragraphs into the correct order.
  • Reading: Fill in the Blanks: Complete a passage by filling in the missing words from a list of options.
  • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks: Similar to the previous task but assesses both reading and writing skills as you select the correct word to fit both grammatically and contextually.
Listening (30–43 minutes)

This section assesses your ability to comprehend spoken English, often from academic or formal contexts.

  • Summarize Spoken Text: Listen to a short audio and summarize it in 50-70 words.
  • Multiple-Choice, Choose Multiple Answers: Listen to an audio and select multiple correct answers.
  • Fill in the Blanks: While listening to a recording, fill in the missing words in a transcript.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: Listen to a recording and choose the correct summary from a list.
  • Multiple-Choice, Choose Single Answer: Listen to a recording and select one correct answer.
  • Select Missing Word: A recording is played, and the final word or phrase is replaced by a beep. You have to choose the correct word from a list.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: The transcript of the recording will have errors. You have to identify and click on the incorrect words.
  • Write from Dictation: Listen to a short sentence and type it out exactly.
Scoring & Timing
  • Total Test Duration: Approximately 2 hours.
  • Score Range: 10-90.
  • Scores are based on correct grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and overall coherence in each task. PTE uses a fully automated scoring system, which provides objective and consistent results.
